Handheld or Gimbal?

Everyone has their own preference, but when it comes to shooting, I hear this debate way too often, handheld or gimbal? This is referring to whether or not you would rather use a gimbal to shoot your videos or run and gun with handheld shooting. Most professional videographers such as myself, prefer to use a gimbal. Which in my experience, it is more stable, it gives you a more cinematic look, and can make even the most inexperienced videographer seem professional (they are really nice pieces of gear!) Look below as I go over the pro’s and con’s of both.

First thing is first!

Handheld Pro’s

  • Great for multiple angles

  • Great for last minute shooting

  • Great for close-ups and change of focus

  • Less equipment to hold

Handheld Con’s

  • Footage can be shaky

  • Tracking and following may be difficult

  • Flow of footage may differ

Gimbal Pro’s

  • Super stable footage

  • Clean Tracking and following shots

  • Cinematic footage

  • Less work in post production

  • Can hold more equipment on gimbal

Gimbal Con’s

  • Equipment can get heavy

  • Less angles you can achieve

  • Takes a little more time to set up

In short, either style you use to shoot with, make sure you are using it to the best of your ability. Remember to get creative, and have fun, because that is when you will produce the best footage! Neither one is the wrong or right way to shoot.
